Remember the good ol' days of high school when you were guaranteed to have friends in every single one of your classes? Well, those days are gone! And thank goodness because college is so much more fun than high school. Yet, that moment will happen when you walk into your classes on the first day of the new semester and you realize you don't know a single person. It's ok; don't panic! Remember when I posted about a week or so ago that the time to make connections is now? Well, I wasn't pulling your leg; not knowing anyone in your classes does not have to be a bad thing. Make it into a positive! Get to know people, introduce yourself, let your passions shine through. I especially learned the benefits of this lesson this semester. I'm going to share with you two stories that really hits home the beauty of making connections.
Comm 160: In my Comm 160 course, I walked in and realized I really didn't know anyone but had the same professor from a previous semester. Of course we had to make those typical first-day introductions. The professor wanted to know our name, where we were from, what we wanted to do, and why we were interested in Communication. This past winter break I learned so much about building my own brand and finding my passion for political PR; so I described that. I also describe how I was interested in Communication because it can relate so well to politics and how my dream job is to become the White House Communications Director. He was interested in how I came to be interested in political PR and then said those magic words, "You know, I have a contact who used to be a speech-writer under a couple of Presidents. I could get you in touch with him?" BOOM! I allowed my passion to shine through, my professor caught wind of it, and I gained a new potential contact just because I opened up. Don't be afraid to show your passion; you never know who may be paying attention.
MCJ 152S: The same thing happened in my public relations class: introductions and explained my interest in political PR. When I stated my dream job was to be the White House Communications Director, I noticed another girl's head shot right up when I said that. It really didn't hit me until that same girl approached me after class Thursday afternoon. She simply said, "Hi! I've been meaning to talk to you. I'm interested in political PR too!" Now, excited cannot even begin to describe how I felt when she said that. Not because I made a new connection, but because she was the first person I met who was interested in the same field as me. Don't get me wrong, I did connect with someone with the same interest in political PR before that girl and it was a connection I made over Twitter and you will be hearing from her next week! :) BUT! This girl I met today was the first person FROM MY COURSES who had the same goals. So, I was extremely happy because yes, PR girls need to stick together; but also because she can become a great connection in the same PR industry I want to break into.
The point of this post is don't close yourself off! Hence the 'Mean Girls' photo up above. Smile and show your passion. You never know who may be watching, like my professor, or what new friends you may make, like in my public relations class. So, I challenge you to go out and make new connections! Put yourself out there; you never know who you will meet. Have any interesting "connections" stories want to share? Leave a comment! Until next time...
